We do not manage student desktops at all, we provide free AV (symantec) software and we are looking at providing other free "pest removal" software also. Our policy is that if your machine gets infected, you get to reformat, after the few times, most learn to apply updates in a timely fashion. Our security page: <http://www.columbia.edu/acis/security/> has instructions for turning on automatic updates and other tips for safe computing. We do not provide reformat support, but you can make an appointment to do your reformat in our walk in support area, and ask questions if you are stuck. The way we handle those kind of issues here is that if they manage their own machines we place certain simple expectations on them. If they get 0wned because they didn't update their virus software for 3 years, then they get to clean their own machines and stay offline til it gets certified. That's usually enough to encourage "ok" behavior. I know some other departments charge "cleaning fees" for infected machines. j -----Original Message----- From: The EDUCAUSE Security Discussion Group Listserv [mailto:SECURITY () LISTSERV EDUCAUSE EDU] On Behalf Of Chad McDonald Sent: Tuesday, November 30, 2004 11:56 AM To: SECURITY () LISTSERV EDUCAUSE EDU Subject: Re: [SECURITY] Question Regarding a Managed Desktop Environment GC&SU is using a managed desktop for faculty, staff, and computer lab environments though we are receiving a lot of arguments from faculty who want full control regardless of stated need. I would like to produce some documentation which identifies the pro's and con's of this type of solution through the people who actually use it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, - Chris
