The Security+ was revamped and I recommend to anyone who would like to pursue the CASP. I just achieved that cert and it was up to par with the CISSP and CISA that I took. They are all valid. I think some are simply stating the Security+ isn't held as highly as some others. However, with CompTIA redoing their security+ test either last year or this (can't remember exactly when) it will be interesting to see if it gains a little more ground. A+ used to be considered nothing as people could have certified with legacy technology, but since moving to CE status is quickly gaining ground as a decent entry level certification since it means you have current knowledge. -----Original Message----- From: listbounce () securityfocus com [mailto:listbounce () securityfocus com] On Behalf Of Ron Sent: Tuesday, May 08, 2012 2:57 PM To: Joseph Hargis Cc: Anwar Khan; Mohamed Farid; dolan.alex () gmail com; security-basics () securityfocus com Subject: Re: CompTIA Qualifications Well, one has to start somewhere.,right. We are not born pen testers. Why not get a formal education too? Not just a certification.. Anyway go ahead and continue bashing comptia. CompTIA Security+ is absolutely not a joke. And here is why - everyone has to start somewhere. In the process of studying and preparing for the exam properly - i.e. purchasing and reading the books, learning the concepts, learning the terminology - a student is laying the groundwork for advanced certifications. And ultimately the purpose for taking a certification exam is to demonstrate to a potential employer that you have a verified level of knowledge, skills, and abilities; proof that you have put in the time and effort to learn the concepts. Is it possible to pass the exam without understanding the fundamental security concepts that Sec+ is designed and intended to teach? Certainly (and unfortunately) yes. But, for those that do this it will very quickly become apparent to an employer
that this is what has happened. And they will just as quickly lose their job - and deservedly so. When given the proper respect it deserves the CompTIA Security+ cert is no joke. Study fr the exam, take the exam, and honor it for what it is - a stepping stone.
