Is there any REAL reason that you need a firewall appliance at home?

If you really need a dedicated firewall system, and money is an option, then check out SmoothWall:

Grab a junk machine, bump up the memory and maybe the processor, install this and you're off to the races.

Hello List

It is about time for me to renew my subscription for my home firewall
appliance.

I am currently allowed to use 5 'nodes' accessing the internet at the
same time and I have a URL filtering subscription along with the usual
software/hardware support.
With Father Christmas being particularly fond of devices that require an
IP address (iPods - Xboxes - etc) I need to upgrade from 5 to 25 nodes.

In total I am going to have to pay around 900 US dollars!!!

What are my alternatives?

I have looked at Sonicwall, Sofaware, etc.
Any recommendations? other solutions to keep my home network and kids
safe?

Thanks in advance.

Paul
