If the idea is network & protocol analysis Fluke is good, but if you are
looking at monitoring & management; I would bet on Nagios -
http://www.nagios.org/download/download.php

However options are very wide when it comes to NMS.

Subject: Network Assessment tool

Hi everyone:

I'm looking for an optimal tool in order to make network assessment in a
LAN; I've found Fluke Networks OptiView, EtherScope y NetFlow Tracker, but
find them really expensive...

Do anyone know some reasonable solution, based on SW, HW or both?

All the best,

Valentín Fernández Bolland
