Thanks for all of the replies, here are a few points I'd like to add so there is more information: I am not running VoIP (to my knowledge, this is just a small home network) I am somewhat experienced with linux, and will have to check out Knoppix STD I'll also check out LANGuard. Terminal: I found the IPs using Angry IP Scanner, I'm using Windows XP (on all the home systems, I haven't had time to set up my boxes reserved for Debian and FreeBSD) with 802.11g (which is having sad reception throughout the place, I was trying to find a way to connect to the AP to configure it and hopefully edit the firmware). Also, on NMap, I do have it, however, unfortunately I can't seem to get any output from it besides errors. On 8/15/05, Steve McLaughlin <steve () lan com au> wrote:
For IP/port scanning. My personal fav, Nmap. This is an open source tool, and probably the best at it (in my opinion). There is even a version that will run on Windows now. Just google for nmap, and download the binaries. Also, I believe that if you are running Windows (I am assuming as you r a newbie). Then there is a great scanner called LANguard. You used to be able to download it and run a free trial for 30 days. Im not sure if that's still the case though. But have a look because its easy to understand the output of the scans with LANguard, and it runs on Windows. My personal favourite in pen-tesing tools would have to be Nessus which runs on Linux. And the best distribution of this (in my opinion again) would be Knoppix STD. There are two versions of Knoppix, but the STD (Security Tools Distribution) is the one you want. Then you have all the pen-testing tools you want, and because it's a Live CD, you don't have to install it, just boot from the CD and Disco! Using Knoppix STD you have nmap, nessus, airsnort, and any other really useful tool you could ever think of for pen-testing and scanning. However, I found a strange thing residing at 192.168.15.2, which ran something by Marconi called Element Manager. My network starts at 192.168.0.x, so I was wondering if this is still in the realm of a private network (so far as IP assignment) and if anyone had any info on what exactly this is. Also, I would appreciate it if some could direct me to some decent network administration tools I can use to secure and find vulnerabilities with my network. I am still at a 'new' level with network security and administration (which I've been interested in for a long time, but I've just been overwhelmed by all the information out there) and enjoy learning whatever I can. Thanks.
