That will depend on what machine your use - I gather Sun has a Java
compiler at least for internal use.  But it is important to keep the
issues distinct so that when such a compiler does come along you can
know the reason for your prior decision.

I know that for one of the non-C languages I use there is a bytecode
version available, but I have no interest in that due to some of the
issues you have mentioned (and others).
