RE: [HITB-Announce] REMINDER: HITB2011 - Malaysia Call for Papers Closes on the 15th

I have relatives there! There is no freedom of the press in Malaysia and the only uncensored news is coming from
private YouTube videos and pictures on Facebook, Twitter and as well and other news sources that the Malaysian
government cannot control such as MalaysiaKini. I saw the videos and pictures with my own eyes and I have been there
when this stuff was going on. While I was there the last time the government had an unarmed opposition leader executed
in his office (although the official statement is that they don't know what happened). I did not get my information
from any "Mainstream Media" outlets nor did I pay any attention to the censored government controlled media either.
The people on this list can make their own minds up. My point here is not to get into any political discussion but to
provide my firsthand experience and knowledge of what is really going on in Malaysia. People need to make informed
decisions when they travel and not just assume that everything will be like where they are from. This is especially
true for people who are from Australia, Europe and the US where people have freedom to assemble and petition without
police and government harassment.

There's no such thing as "civil unrest" in Malaysia right now, the recent event on 9th of July are an isolated event.
Kuala Lumpur was shutdown to public and private transportation to avoid any unwanted damages -- people walking were
allowed to go in and business were running as usual. Try to do some research from various sources and not just your
mainstream media before posting up on mailing list saying it's dangerous in Malaysia :)

Just a word of warning to this list about traveling to Kuala Lumpur,
Malaysia. There is civil unrest in Malaysia and the police and ruling
regime are brutally repressing their own people. They are also
arbitrarily shutting down access to KL (Kuala Lumpur) and mass
transit. They are also blocking access to foreign embassies and
consulates so if you get into trouble getting help may be an issue.
The last time I traveled there to visit relatives they shut down
access to KL right after we left. Consider your personal safety and
ensure you register with your country's consulate or embassy prior to
traveling to Malaysia. While I doubt that the ruling class will harass
foreigners traveling into Malaysia for a conference if they shut down
road or mass transit access your trip could be disrupted or if you get
stuck in a free and fair elections demonstration you may be
inadvertently included in with the demonstrators and arrested.
