Hi Paul, One solution which I have been looking into recently is untangle (http://www.untangle.com/). The really good thing with this is that it's completely free, has a really easy to use interface and if you have an old-ish pc with 2 network cards you don't even need to buy any hardware. I got a working firewall with intrusion prevention, spyware filtering, web filtering, ad blocking, virus scanning, and even a vpn server up and running in 30 minutes. Even better, if you have some experience with Linux, the backend is Debian so it is easily customizable and a lot can be done with it. But even if you don't have any experience with Linux everything you will need for a home network (or even up to a medium sized company) can be done with the web interface. It's really easy to install and can act as the gateway or it can go behind a router/firewall as a transparent security bridge. I would advise trying it out as it can't hurt because it's completely free (install the open-source package using the web interface, this will install all the free packages in one go) and all you have to do is configure the ruleset. Each feature is easily turned off/on using the interface. I would like to see what other people's opinion is on this distribution. Hello List It is about time for me to renew my subscription for my home firewall appliance. I am currently allowed to use 5 'nodes' accessing the internet at the same time and I have a URL filtering subscription along with the usual software/hardware support. With Father Christmas being particularly fond of devices that require an IP address (iPods - Xboxes - etc) I need to upgrade from 5 to 25 nodes. In total I am going to have to pay around 900 US dollars!!! What are my alternatives? I have looked at Sonicwall, Sofaware, etc. Any recommendations? other solutions to keep my home network and kids safe? Thanks in advance.
