This response has little or nothing to do with the TERM environment variable. Imagine that you're sitting in front of a real, live VT100 terminal, logged into a UNIX system where TERM is set to "dumb". The VT100 has no way of knowing what this variable is set to, and will likely respond "VT100". -- - mdz
