1. where'd you get that startup script for barnyard2? 
Part of the install from this webpage.

2. what OS are you running barnyard2 on?
Ubuntu 12.04.4

3. if you are on a *nix OS, where is your sh command interpreter located?
Not sure how to tell

4. if you are on a *nix OS, is the barnyard2 script located in your /etc/init.d?
The executable yes.
sysadmin@rlicsnortids:/etc/init.d$ ls -al barnyar*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1840 Apr  4 10:17 barnyard2
