Upgrading Barnyard2

I am in need of upgrading Barnyard2 because of any error received.  I already have 2.1.8 installed.

Do I need to do a make clean in the barnyard2 tarball to get rid of it all and then reinstall the new one?

Or can I just accomplish a ./configure -with-mysql && make && make install?

I am guess I should copy my barnyard2.conf file to a different directory and then move it back when accomplished?
