Are you seriously claiming innocence here? It would have been wise to look in the mirror prior to your posting. RA has been nothing short of honest here. We are completely up front about our postings to the group. Our subject lines are what the posts are about, and the numbers of posts just do not justify abuse as you claim. If it is just a new rule you would like, then you might have used that angle rather than making accusations, which you are guilty of as well. After several emails here between us, we wouldn't be opposed to the complete ban of product context including sales / marketing text and tag-lines from snort product vendors. A subject from "Eric Hines" CEO/Chairmen from Applied Watch, to the group which doesn't appear to be "accidental": "Applied Watch is now FREE for Non-Commercial Use after overwhelming Demand!" The clause you appear to put in your postings are justification? "***** Turn off the flame throwers, this information was requested by the user so am CCing the list as well in case anyone else might be looking for commercial Snort support *****" And replies such as this are justification as well? "You might also check out the Applied Watch Command Center if you are looking for a commercial solution. The Agent, Server, and Console all install on Redhat as well as Windows, Unix, and Mac." Just be honest here, our dozen or so postings to the group over the past 365 days has somehow tickled your nerves as a competing vendor and it clearly would have been professional to contact us directly rather than initiate a classless flamewar as you have done. And a final newsgroup tidbit of wisdom: "The first liar, never has a chance." As you, this is an utter waste of bits and shall end here. On Nov 2, 2006, at 6:15 PM, Eric Hines wrote:
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I consider your Halloween Special Savings email and your coupons to be far different than me posting replies to help people with Snort related posts that contain my auto-signature, sorry, but you are quite off on that one. Also, I admitted that a few Applied Watch sales reps have made a few posts in the past accidentally doing a REPLY-ALL to a snort-user's post but I beg to differ that the 99 postings you've referenced are advertisements. Again, comparing: 1) Applied Watch accidental CCs to the snort list in response to a user's post 2) Remote Assessment's posting of holiday special pricing on your product to this list. Why don't you try and go back on your math and calculate what % of my emails are posts to the list in answering Snort questions and help compared to those accidental CCs and then compare the # of posts Remote Assessment has made to this list to contribute in helping the Snort community. As far as I can recall, I've never seen anyone from the remoteassessment.com domain helping users on this list. Hmmm, interesting, google pulls up nothing but Aanval announcements for remoteassessment.com and a search in my inbox shows nothing but Aanval announcements dating all the way back to February of 2006 for this year alone. Have you actually done anything to help anyone on this list or was it your marketing strategy to subscribe here and post Aanval coupons? I don't want to waste anymore list bandwidth on this. You can address me offline if you wish. Seeing as you are a competitor in the market, we are not at all surprised, however we are not in the market to make enemies with petty or snide replies/comments. Just a few facts; A quick search of the newsgroup shows "Applied Watch" in approximately 99 postings, and "Aanval" in approximately 91 postings. I don't see any clear advantage or abuse of the group here. Aanval is also in the tag-line of several posters who are resellers of the product, which accounts for roughly 75% of those postings containing our product name. administration () remoteassessment com posted 23 times dating back to spring of 2004. eric.hines@appliedwatch posted 78 times since spring of 2004. Our postings to the forum have been rather moderate in our opinion, 15 for 2006, 4 for 2005 and 4 for 2004. Many users of snort first find information regarding consoles, interfaces, appliances and other snort solutions (Free or commercial) through the use of the Snort Users Group. Regardless if the product is clearly indicated in the subject line, or hidden in a tag line we believe it serves the same purpose. We've just received several emails from list members/clients with an opposing view, who indicate they have an interest in seeing information on existing products, improvements, etc through the snort group for all vendors. We agree with your comments on not wishing the group to become a commercial highway, however this clearly isn't happening since Aanval was introduced (3 years ago). To be honest, if the Applied Watch Dashboard is updated or enhanced with new features, I am sure the majority of snort users would love to hear about it. If not, they do as I do and delete irrelevant topics as I almost did this one. And my .02 makes .04 ./Loyal On Nov 2, 2006, at 4:21 PM, Eric Hines wrote: OK I'm so sick of these Remote Assessment commercials to this list and can't bite my tongue anymore regarding their blatant use of this list for posting coupons and holiday specials. Why is Remote Assessment allowed to send coupons and pricing specials (like the Halloween special on 10/31) to this list as well as product announcements? Where does this stop? Yes, and before some of you throw it back to us, Applied Watch has /mistakenly/ did a REPLY-ALL to the snort-users list in the past when sending an email to someone but never blatantly emailed pricing specials like we saw earlier this week and now this one from Remote Assessment. I understand that Aanval is offered as a restricted free version, but if the company sells it as a product, I don't see why Remote Assessment should be allowed to announce to this list new product releases. If this is the case, than Applied Watch and all the other Snort integrators out there should be able to assume the same posture. If the Snort management product is completely free -- a true open source product and is not sold or offered as a commercial solution, then I think they should have the right to announce to this list. However, products such as Aanval and ActiveWorx shouldn't (I've seen Jeff Dell do the same thing in the past). If this is the case, Applied Watch's Dashboard is free so therefore we should be allowed the same rights to using this list as a marketing and sales vehicle that these other companies are. I have no interest in posting commercials for Applied Watch to this list, so a line needs to be drawn in the sand and I think its only fair that announcements to this list for Snort products be limited to strictly free solutions that have no commercial version. There's my 2 cents.
