Not to drift FAR off topic here...

I run all my Snort sensors on FreeBSD 5.x MINIMAL, but when it comes to
Linux for an IDS or packet filter, I'd really  have to recommend Pebble
Linux.  Look into it, perhaps it (or another slimmed down distro) is for
you.

The less the better, in my opinion.
