Hi there,

I'm getting confused with the announce of 1.9, and the availability of
Snort 2.0 (at least on paper) by SourceFire. Could somebody clarify
the version snafu ?

Speaking as a snort.org person....

I know its confusing and I'm trying to get this taken care of. The
short answer is 1.9.0 came out after LOTS of testing in the community.
Still bugs there but they are only found by getting the people that
upgrade when stable.

The 1.9 branch is going to continue on its merry way. As bug reports
come in, ( as a few have ), I put them on my todo list to look at in
my spare time and triage appropriately

The HEAD of CVS is what we're calling Snort 2.0. Sourcefire gave a
_lot_ of excellent code to the snort project after putting it through
it's paces for Sourcefire product development.

Snort 2.0's technology base is coming from that. However, snort.org
has to have the non-sourcefire people like Phil Wood and Andrew
Barisani and Chad Kreimendahl and .... put it through it's paces on
their networks.

So from my perspective, Sourcefire released Snort 2.0 technology to
snort.org. Everything that makes it a proper snort.org 2.0 release
has yet to be done but the tech part is there.

I hope this helps clear up the confusion. What it really means is
that the HEAD branch of snort CVS is headed towards 2.0 development.

The stable branch for snort.org is 1.9.0 and we're working on making
2.0 stable non-sourcefire platforms.
