Hal,

        Err...  Not quite.  Those files only stop snort when the machine
changes run levels.  That has nothing to do with the error below:

snort: FATAL ERROR: database: mysql_error: Can't connect to local MySQL
server through socket '/var/run/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)

        Since it starts from a script that you can run by hand, but not on
bootup, it's either permissions, wrong user, a path problem, or a problem of
what shell you are running.  It's kinda the same type of error when a cronjob
won't cron, but will run just fine from the commandline.
