My understanding is that when you register through Prometric, you are
asked for a code that they provide to you after processing your
application.

And who exactly checks your status when you can register through
prometric?

Quoting Russell Butturini <rbutturini () tcstech com>:

If memory serves, the stipulation is that you must either take the
course, or have two years of related experience in security work. If
you don't take the course, you must have a signed letter from your
supervisor on company letterhead stating that you have completed this
work, describe your daily tasks, etc.
