There is a Version Scan patch available for nmap.

ftp://ftp.saurik.com/pub/nmap/

it tries to determine protocol versions and product names.
This Version Scan is often more reliable, mainly if the host
is hidden behind a firewall.

I _always_ try to verify this with telnet.
