Re: Wireless assessment app

If I recall, all of those devices were non-root. My device is rooted,
but I don't think it had any bearing, as I seem to remember rooting
afterwards. Pcap Capture is a odd beast, in that the driver for the
ALFA card is usable on monitor more, but all in userspace - no root
required.

I'm thinking of getting a Samsung Galaxy S4, Android version that Google
recently announced. Do these apps require root or just Vanilla Android?

I agree w/Larry -- Check out WiFi Analyzer for Android.

    Brian,

We talk about this quite a bit in SANS SEC617. I hate to say it, but I
think you are correct on the iPhone side, mostly due to the fact that
the wireless drivers are "less than open". To my knowledge, monitor mode
support does not exist on non-jailbroken iDevices (I'm not sure about
    jailbroken ones).

My solution? Go Android. I picked up a Nexus 7 and use the following
    tools frequently:

Kisbee - Zigbee sniffer (for use with 3rd party hardware)
Pcap Capture - Monitor mode WiFi capture with a specific ALFA wireless
    card and OTG cable
    WiFiFoFum - Rogue AP locator
WiFi Analyzer - Kismet-like wireless discovery
WiGLE WiFi Wardriving - Kismet-like wireless discovery
Cloudshark - Cloud based wireshark for analyzing pcaps

    Hope that helps.
