Yes, people fall for this.  If they didn't, attackers wouldn't do it.

We tend to forget that both people like ourselves and the
stereotypical "stupid user" are at the *far* ends of a very wide
spectrum. Any attack that works anywhere on the spectrum is viable, it
just comes down to cost of launch vs likelihood of and magnitude of
reward.  The fact that bereavement scams are still viable indicates
just how many people there are out there being taken advantage of.
