I think getting involved with a mentor program is a great idea. SANS
has programs for that as well.

Also, you may want to consider trying to create a
project/blog/twitter/web site where you show that you are trying to do
stuff. We all had to show that we were serious about learning before
someone would teach us. I had to backup a whole bunch of systems every
night using magnetic tapes and a pair of pliers before people would
teach me how to program. Luke had to travel all the way to the dagobah
system and convince Yoda to teach him.... etc...

Cheers,
Paul

Hello PaulDotCom,

Pardon this break in awesome content.

I'm looking for someone who lives within 100 miles from around Modesto,
Ca (Bay Area, Sacramento, Fresno Areas) that would like to take me under
their wing, so to speak, and show me the ways of the Security Ninja. In
other words, I need a someone who can take a moment and show me how you
do what you do. It could be penetration testing, report writing, or
something else security related.

A little about me:

Avid listener of PaulDotCom for a couple of years now. I own a
PaulDotCom red shirt, although my wife frowns on me wearing it. Attended
Defcon 17, and have the badge to prove it. I have a dream of helping
people become more security aware by breaking their stuff and then
telling them how they failed. I am currently racking up obscene debt
attending University of Phoenix getting my BS in Information Security. I
have ITIL Foundations and Security+ certifications.
