Hacking a WRT54GS

Are you sure it's version 1.2? You may be able to update that, but
anyway, DD-WRT supports the WRT54GS:
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Supported_Devices#Linksys_.28all_the_rest_that_is_not_re-engineered_til_today.29

As does OpenWRT: http://wiki.openwrt.org/Hardware/Linksys

I didn't see the ability to use it with version 1.2, but again, you
may be able to up/down grade to something that will work. I did a GS
on a 1.x version. With those, you have another hoop to jump though
(see DD_WRT), but it works.

Another option is the Tomato Firmware (http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato).
