I'm not sure whether this is the issue.   For one, when I check out a 
new, fresh copy of the repository the SVN update will work through a 
couple of trees, then fail, asking for a login.     Does not SVN store 
the default username for the repository in the .svn structure?  (pardon, 
I've forgotten as I have moved on to GIT a long time ago).    It seems 
it does for the root .svn but some of the others it does not.

For the record, what is the default username for the repo?    Fyodor, 
you said you changed something with the username root.  But it still has 
the same symptoms on my end.
