Yes, you've got a good point there.  With the inital custom patches against
5.35DC1 it got down to under 5 minutes, if I recall correctly.  Seeing as
how all the interim versions we tried just simply crashed, I was happy
getting back to a working state (I didn't want to stay on a custom-patched
5.35DC1 forever...)

As this is a corner case I'm not hugely concerned if we don't regain the
awesome performance -- but if you think you might be able to do just that,
let me know what you would like me to test.  :-)
