my intiial that is that it might be a connection problem but I am also not sure what dnet: failed to open device eth8 
is? 

Hi, it looks like you are running under Windows Vista. Make sure that
you run Nmap in a console with administrator privileges. (Right-click
the console icon and select "Run as Administrator" or similar.)
