More specific? Well have a deamon which starts out of inetd (almost too
easy to do) and takes a string from the socket and then executes nmap and
passes the string as an argument to nmap. It then reads from
STDOUT/STDERR and sends the output of nmap back to the user.

This keeps all the intelligence centralized on the client interface which
makes it easier to manage.

I'd recommend that you have some kind of authentication in the daemon for
the client to prevent people from taking over your agents and using them
against you/others. Bonus points for encrypting the communication between
the the client/server.

Isn't all that difficult, and I'd be surprised if someone with less than
perfect intentions hasn't done it already.

Personally, I would prefer a simple client/daemon wrapper for nmap. That
would provide an easy to maintain layer of abstraction between nmap and
the means of communication. One could write such an animal in a few hours
with Perl which would be almost as portable as a C app.
sounds interesting! could you please be more specific on your idea?
