How does IPv6 addressing work?

The best overview that I know of is here:

It is mostly summarised from a thread on the NANOG mailing list.

Don't assume that an IPv4 expert can give you good advice on IPv6.
Many IPv4 experts have only a marginal understanding of v6. Do your
own research. Go to Barnes and Noble, spend a couple of months with
Google, and check out the other pages on the website above.
