Subject: Code for America: a new kind of public service for geeks

Nick Bilton just did a nice job of covering the Code for America fellows program for the NYT:

Changing Government and Tech with Geeks

Talking about government and computer programming likely doesn’t evoke the feeling of “fun” for most Americans. But
a group of Web geeks and technology leaders are trying to change that with a new nonprofit project, Code for
America, which aims to import the efficiency of the Web into government infrastructures.

The group, which received seed funding from the Case Foundation andSunlight Foundation, among others, is the result
of a private initiative by technologists. And it recently announced that it is recruiting fellows to work on its
projects.

According to its Web site, “during the 11-month program, fellows will receive a crash course in municipal
government,” along with networking and mentoring programs, “while they work in teams to develop open-source
applications” for assigned cities. They also will be assigned to work with designated government groups.

....

This is an important project, and I'm a big supporter. (I'm also on the board.) Would love it if folks on the list
could spread the word that we're recruiting fellows.

People might also enjoy these posters with great quotes from American history, rendered with an unusual twist:
