I think I finally have to admit that the smaller traditional ISPs
have reached rock-bottom with respect to customer service and
support. And if I (slightly more clueful and persistent than most of
the mass market) am not able to force my way through a problem, I
don't know how we expect the mass market users to do anything other
than roll over and be abused.

First, I use Bway.net for my dialup and web site... they answer their phone with a human within 4 rings... Amazing that that still have a live person
doing this.

The entire independent ISP market was put out of business because the Bell
companies were able to get rid of line sharing, blocking the ISPs from
reselling DSL and substandard customer services... yet some still survived.

But if you want substandard customer services, simply look at the big guys
-- AT&T for example, only has customer service hours from 8:-5PM,
Monday-Friday. Verizon is about the same.

After being disconnected by AT&T last week -- where, after I paid I was told
that I would have to wait 3-5 days before my service was going to be
restored --- or given the wrong information --- oh, Verizon blocked your
long distance service, not us. When my Verizon service went out last year because their online service didn't work properly, they too, don't answer their phones on weekends... and they control the network services for most
of telecom, including businesses...

The real issue seems to be that some companies, like the indie-ISPs still
have care... Verizon and AT&T no longer have to worry about those pesky
competitors --- AT&T used to have 24-7 service. Verizon, you would think, in
a 24-hour Internet world would have had to step up to the plate...

Ironically, Time Warner, my cablecos, now has 24-7 service, in response to
getting beaten up about customer problems a few years back... and so far
they still answer their phones...
