Dave, for IP, if you please:

I'm not finding this discussion 'nasty', I think people are being  
clear and direct.

One aspect which has not been brought up is the fact that Skype is  
pleading for open access to others' infrastructure, while being a  
closed commercial system in itself.

The only way to get calls into or out of Skype is by using either  
their own client, or licensed (i.e. mfrs. who pay Skype) clients.    
No interactivity with other SIP/VoIP clients or services are allowed.

Thus, besides the completely valid arguments about their parasitic  
use of others' bandwidth, their own prejudicial closed meta-network  
stance makes Skype's hollow pleas an exemplary case of the pot  
calling the kettle black.
