someone on this list knows more.

A few days ago, I received what I recognized from the old long-
distance "slamming" days as a verification call. A firm whose name I
didn't catch asked me if I would verify my registration information

This was certainly done by "Domain Registry Of America" (aka DROA). Back
about 5-6 years ago they did this same thing via mailout. You'd get a
card in the mail saying "your domain XYZ.COM is about to expire, please
fill out this form to renew it." Included in the form was a transfer
request.

If you google around for them you'll find plenty of nasty reports, but in
essence they are exactly as was posted by glenn: A registrar "slammer."

Fun quick facts:
-Despite their name, it's a canadian company
-The FTC has put an injuction against them in 2003 for the mailout scam,
allowing anyone who transferred to them pre 2003 to get their money
returned
-They charge about $50 per year, more than 5 times the going rate for
domain registrations

http://support.easydns.com/domain.slammers/droa.php has a nice scan of
their old mailouts, and info can be found about their current phone
practices with some digging.
