Powell said he plans to use TiVo to record shows to play on other
TV sets in his home, and suggested he might share recordings with
his sister if she misses a show.

To share programs with his sister, he'll have to violate the DMCA.
TiVo announced Thursday that they will be building public-key crypto
into their Series 2 model (the only one that will be able to share
recordings). To share programs within your house, you will need to
be authorized -- presumably this just means paying TiVo a fee -- and
sending programs outside your house will be verboten.

Locking consumers out of sharing programs they record is their way,
in press-release-speak, to "benefit consumers."

Thursday's press release here:

Some of the key innovations of the new TiVoGuard(TM) copy
protection system that benefit consumers and copyright holders,
    include:

        * Every TiVo Series2 DVR contains a unique public/private key
pair so that only designated recorders with the Home Media
Option can engage in multi-room viewing.

        * Use of digital certificates to ensure that TiVo DVRs with
the Home Media Option cannot send content outside the home.

        * Video programs are encrypted to ensure a secure transfer
between TiVo DVRs within the home.
