DoCoMo chief not gung-ho on mergers

ORLANDO, Florida - The head of Japan's largest wireless carrier, NTT DoCoMo
Inc, on Monday said any acquisitions on his part in the U.S. market would
only be carried out with specific strategic targets in mind.

"The Americans talk too much about consolidation," President and Chief
Executive Keiji Tachikawa told Reuters in an interview after a presentation
here. "It should be important for the American market, but they should have
a clear-cut strategy in mind."

Consolidation should be carried out between partners "for technology,
spectrum and coverage," he said.

NTT DoCoMo's listing on the New York Stock Exchange last week was not meant
as a sign of a push into the United States, he said.

"We wanted to increase the global liquidity for our shares and increase our
fundraising options," he said.

CS First Boston analyst Mark Berman said he doubted there was an "immediate
reason" that NTT DoCoMo listed its stock on the NYSE, but the company may
increase its presence in the U.S. over time.

NTT DoComo owns a minority stake in AT&T Wireless Services Inc, the No. 3
U.S. wireless telephone company. (Reuters News)
