It would be much better if the press did not unilaterally expand the role of ICAN and leave that to the Internet citizens and others djf] Government Officials Join Voices Urging Caution on Internet Oversight Vote By JERI CLAUSING [] CAIRO -- On the same day that the Internet's oversight organization met here with public-interest groups to discuss safeguards for an unprecedented online election, government officials from around the world echoed calls for the organization to put caution ahead of its September voting deadline. A communiqué, issued by officials from more than 20 countries, called on the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers to make sure its priority was to "establish a fair an effective process," and to consider extending the Sept. 30 deadline "if necessary."
