[ I have no idea why Jeri calls ICAN the Internbet Oversight group. It
would be much better if the press did not unilaterally expand the role of
ICAN and leave that to the Internet citizens and others djf]

Government Officials Join Voices Urging Caution on Internet Oversight Vote
By JERI CLAUSING []

CAIRO -- On the same day that the Internet's oversight organization met
here with public-interest groups to discuss safeguards for an unprecedented
online election, government officials from around the world echoed calls
for the organization to put caution ahead of its September voting deadline.

A communiqué, issued by officials from more than 20 countries, called on
the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers to make sure its
priority was to "establish a fair an effective process," and to consider
extending the Sept. 30 deadline "if necessary."

Just last week, the public-interest groups issued a report detailing
worldwide skepticism about ICANN's planned election, which would ultimately
select board members representing individual computer users.
