Did.  Seemed to fix the problem.  Then there was a crash towards the end of the day.  However, further investigation 
seemed to indicate that the problem was in the power.  Subsequently, have narrowed it down to either the plug in the 
laptop itself (I will never buy another Toshiba), or in the cable between the transformer and the laptop.  Not quite 
sure.

However, I have not yet installed the update again ...
