This part is something I experimented with for seven years.
It shouldn't come as any surprise that darkening bright white ice
accelerates melting, and there's nothing like cracks and resultant
seepage to do the trick.

Oh, agreed, it's not a surprise that this happens.  Where the uncertainty
seems to lie is in the mathematical modeling of cracking -- that is,
[some of] the models don't seem to fully account for the accelerative
effects.  I think this in turn partially explains why reality keeps turning
out to be worse than forecast.
