Ours are busy playing security theatre with making it look like they're Doing Something to prevent the *last* attack.
[snip] Regarding security theater. In Israel many things are also regarded by civilians as security theater. Sometimes it is indeed 'just a show' and sometimes the guard checking bags at the mall stops the suicide bomber. (This actually happened more than once.) Even when it is (partly) 'just a show', it intimidates terrorists, and prevents them from trying. Many terrorists decided to detonate themselves outside instead of trying their luck with the guard. In these cases, I also see no harm in letting people feel a bit more secure.
