The problem is (in addition to what you mention below) that,
once a machine is compromised, it is simply no longer 'trustable'
because there just too many ways for an attacker to install
trojans/backdoors/etc. for future nefarious purposes.

A salient point.  To which the old response was "boot clean."  In years gone by 
that could be accomplished with a floppy, now you need Knoppix or some such 
due, again, to the complexity of our current systems.  As you say:

Pretty much any modern desktop environment, anyway.  Ah, why did we ever 
leave CP/M?  :-)
