Actually, at the first Uni I attended (when I thought a Bachelors in English was going to be a good idea), we used our SSNs for everything from logging into the Uni network (telnet into a VMS, no less) to using our "pre-paid" cafeteria dollars. I remember one Prof making us sign all our tests with name and SSN... I wonder what he was up to...
