Yep, Cornell University did that up until about 5 years ago.

To their credit, though, they reissued all of the old student ID cards
that had students' SSNs printed on them.

Universities routinely use the SSN as a "Student ID Number", so it would

"make sense" (haha) to provide your SSN when checking out a book.
