I'm seeing quite a rise in spam as well. The reason is most likely
quite simple... Gmail was new before, hence it wasn't spammed. The
best way to get rid of spam in your inbox - get a new one! Only
fool-proof way there is. Now that it's been around for awhile, so has
your email address. (There goes their trump card.)

Realize that it's quite easy to grab the email addresses used for
mailing to this list using one of the thousands of spam-bot gathering
tools available. (We just had this discussion on another mailing list,
plus I believe it was mentioned here.) This list is mirrored in like
100 places and individual posts make their way up to countless others.
Curious as to how exposed your email address is or looking for a nice
"PoC" so to speak? Simple - Google your email address. ;)

Now, use one of the many email-address-gathering bots out there that
spammers (and other scum) love so much and you've got a nice
collection of fresh, guarenteed active emails. Time to test that
"Spam" folder Gmail provides.

Interesting i've noticed a great increase in various different scams
finally hitting gmail inboxes. To begin with gmail was for the most
part free of spam, phishing, scams. This week has seen the start of
gmail finally getting hit by the malicious stuff, the other mail
networks have been suffering from for years. Lots of people thought
maybe gmail is using something new which is making gmail more immune
to spam than other webbased email. It seems after the week ending, the
bubble has finally burst on the gmail beta service.

For now i'll keep pressing the "report phishing/spam" button on gmail
and hope the recent spate of inbox phishing/spam/scams are resolved by
gmail filtering, but I get the feeling its here to stay now, and
remember the gmail service is still only beta, so who knows what is
still yet to come.

Thanks,
