My $0.02 - before you get flooded with all possible links for all the
tools in the world (I can send you off-list probably tens of such), I
would dare an advice (DISCLAIMER: I am in no way related to the
author, or have any financial interests in the publisher): go and buy
one book: "The TAO of Network Security" - see here for the link:
http://www.taosecurity.com/books.html, and for the author's blog
(http://taosecurity.blogspot.com/)

I can tell you one thing: the only book I've always carried with me,
up until this year, as a reference, was always Stevens' first volume
of TCP/IP Illustrated - for years. Ever since I bought the above book,
I had to make room for it, also, by my laptop, in my briefcase

... and YES - it is related to the $subj - it is only about free/open
source tools (and so much more) ...

... and don't take my word for it: I have first found out about it
here - http://books.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/08/27/1538228&tid=172&tid=6
- saw th "clean" 10 out of 10 rating - then I went to Borders, browsed
it for half an hour - and I was literally hooked!

Stef

Gentleman,

I have been having all kinds of quirky network problems at one of my
facilities. I always used SnifferPro to identify "top talkers" and babbling
machines.

Now that I work for "The Hive" I am no longer allowed to purchase licenses
for such wonderful products.

So the question is more of a poll of what the "best of the best" use for
there networks.

M$ and *NIX cheap and free.
