This is less true today than it has been in the past. Support has become a *huge* business (in dollar terms). Companies are purchasing multi-million dollar, 24x7 support contracts to run mission critical operations, firewalls included. In turn, the companies providing that support are paying top dollar to get and retain consultant-level people.
The best network security consultants make over $100k a year. On wall street, they give these people the title of vice president to fit them into the HR payscales. I would be surprised if vendors pay their support group members in this range--very surprised. There just isn't enough talent out there (yet) to bring salries into the non-astronomical range. Rik
