We use firstname.lastname with a 20 character limit. The owner can shorten or change their name, but must follow
procedure. Last name can only be changed if has been legally changed and has been registered in the ERP. Name can be
shortened, but must use as much of the last name as possible.

We also use 8. The initial value is based upon last name + first initial
+ tie-breaker characters, but the algorithm in use comes up with some
odd choices. At any rate, the user can change their assigned username once. Usernames are not permitted to be reused.

We're in the midst of changing the process for assigning new netIDs,
and one consideration is the length of usernames allowed in various
systems. We've currently got a maximum length of 8, and given that our

maintaining uniqueness and having reasonable netIDs without embedded
numerals. We're considering increasing that to 24 characters.

What maximum length do you have for netIDs?

What is the maximum username length supported in most systems? Some
cursory web searches gave me these numbers:

Windows 256

Linux 32

Oracle 30

MySQL 16

SQL Server 128
