We use firstname.lastname for staff and for students we use - first two
letters of first name, first three letters of last, and a number (counter).
I will not be as concerned about username length as I would be about
password length though. For us, the username is also part of the email
addresses. This simplifies the number of different information related to
logon that our users will have to remember. We focus on password length and
password enforcement and are looking at multi-factor authentication, to
bolster authentication security.
