That worked pretty smoothly, Isabelle, but even with that method, you
have to enable Javascript on the page where you download/install the add-on.

I haven't seen that and I'm using the same browser but I installed it
in a slightly different way. There's a button in the bottom right-hand
corner of the page (it's grey text on white button, so kind of hard to
see) that should say "Firefox" (in Chrome it will say "Chrome"). If
you click on this it will give you a pop-up with a link to the
DuckDuckGo search engine add-on (which is SSL by default, also nice).
Maybe give that a try?

Other add ons work fine.

Now I just need a good free web-based email alternative...

Wow! Nice! I like it. Fast. No ads.

Perhaps promising, though I've not used it much yet, so can't vouch
for the quality of search. The main idea they are selling is that
they
don't retain user data:

I like it even better.

It would be nice if this idea catches on as a valuable thing to look
for in online services.

Yes. I just changed my Google Chrome instance to use it as the default
search engine. I'll see how it goes. Might just have to change over my
other machines/browsers.

Thanks again.
