The SANS@EDU program very much still exists. Training budgets have been a bear to work with in the recent past, so trying to gauge enough interest in courses in order to put them on hasn't been successful. This is why it is so important for folks to let SANS know when you're looking for another course. Hopefully you have someone from your institution that is a member of the SANS@EDU advisory board, if not, I'm sure Daryl Gilbertson (dgilbertson () sans org) would love to hear from you. In the meantime, I don't know of any 503 (Intrusion Detection In-Depth) courses coming up, but SANS is offering a buy one, get one free deal on 401 (Security Essentials Bootcamp Style) for the course that starts October 11, 2011. This is offered via vlive (online), so no travel is involved. E-mail Scott Hazen (shazen () sans org) if you're interested. -- Kerry Havens

I very much enjoyed a more local university hosting a SANS course (or two) that was interesting and not being gouged $3500. SANS CDI is coming to DC in December and I would very much like to attend, but everything is way too expensive for us to send one of us, let alone two or three. If I could get SANS Intrusion Detection In-Depth for a good price, I would be there in a heartbeat. I very much enjoyed it at Virginia Tech many years ago and a refresher would be awesome. I also have a new employee that I want to send to Security Essential Bootcamp. Hopefully I can convince my uppers to send him. -dan -----Original Message----- From: The EDUCAUSE Security Constituent Group Listserv [mailto:SECURITY () LISTSERV EDUCAUSE EDU] On Behalf Of Kerry Havens Sent: Wednesday, September 21, 2011 5:01 PM To: SECURITY () LISTSERV EDUCAUSE EDU Subject: Re: [SECURITY] Register Now! The tentative plan is to enable continuous play for the months leading up to the conference and then have a tournament duringtheconference. This would give people a chance to practice their hacking skills before pitting those skills against others in the education community. NetWars is an interactive environment for computer attacks and analyzing defenses. It is split into 5 different skill levels; a written skills assessment is provided at the end of play so participants will understand which skills need improvement. If we get enough interest, it would $700 for the continuous play. Participation in the tournament would be included if you attend the Security Professional Conference. If you would like to participate in the tournament and will not be attending the conference in person, therewouldbe an additional cost, which has not been determined yet.
