We've had great success with GetDataBack (http://www.runtime.org/) unless the hard drive is physically damaged. I had a 20 gig fat 32 partition that was corrupted by Partition Magic during a resize. I was able to use Knoppix STD to rebuild the file allocation table and recover the data.
