We use Mac OS X Tiger server as SSH + SOCKS5 server. Tiger can attach to AD or LDAP server for authentication. On Tiger server, attach it to AD/LDAP and turn on SSH server option then it's ready for use. On client side (Win, OS X or *nix) use Putty or built-in ssh client to connect to the Tiger server via SSH to use SOCKS5. Follow the link as an example of how to setup a SOCKS5 client (Firefox) to connect to this Tiger SOCKS5 server. http://www.angeltech.us/?RESOURCES:Technical_How_To:Bypass_Firewall All your SOCKS5 traffic will be encrypted via ssh from the client to the ssh server. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Vuong Phung Systems Administrator College of Science - Dean's Office San Jose State University One Washington Square San Jose, CA 95192-0099 Duncan Hall 33 Tel 1.408.924.5056 Fax 1.408.924.5033 Web <https://ncs.science.sjsu.edu/helpdesk> https://ncs.science.sjsu.edu/helpdesk ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ -----Original Message----- From: Chris Green [mailto:cmgreen () UAB EDU] Sent: Tuesday, October 09, 2007 11:12 AM To: SECURITY () LISTSERV EDUCAUSE EDU Subject: [SECURITY] Socks5 Proxy Recommendations? Good day, As part of a project we are working on, we would like to bring up a SOCKS5 server as a "stage1" workaround for problems people encounter. Has anyone got good or bad things to say about these particular SOCKS5 implementations? For authentication, I have either AD or LDAP so I'm not particular bound to a platform choice. If you do not want to go on record as saying YAY or NAY for a particular implementation, feel free to send me a message in private. Thanks, Chris -- Chris Green UAB Data Security, 205-975-0842
