The main advantage of microfiche or microfilm is reduced physical storage space. One would need to compare the costs of offsite storage of paper with the costs of microfiche or microfilm before deciding to go with the latter on storage space grounds, though.
Look at 2-d barcodes, if you trust your paper. Of course you lose the redundancy of fonts and English words, but they're hyperredundant anyway. You could use a 2-D barcode with ECC.
